Ursprünglich bestand die Stadt aus einer keltischen Siedlung mit dem Namen Áth Cliath, was soviel wie Hürden-Furt bedeutet. 842 gründeten Wikinger daneben ein eigenes Dorf, das sie Dubh Linn, in etwa Schwarzer Sumpf, nannten. Dieser Sumpf, mit der Liffey verbundet, war von den Wikingern benutzt, um ihre Schiffe zu ankern. Ab 1172 wurde Dublin das Verwaltungszentrum der Anglonormannen.
