El nombre de Turquía en turco: Türkiye, se puede dividir en dos componentes: Türk, que significa 'fuerte' en el viejo turco y el sufijo-iye : 'tierra de'. La península de Anatolia (la mayor parte de la Turquía moderna), es una de las más antiguas regiones habitadas continuamente en el mundo. Tiene por tanto, un impresionante patrimonio de muchos imperios y las personas que reinó en varios puntos de la historia, como los hititas, los griegos, los selyúcidas, los otomanos y muchos más.
