Le nom de la Turquie dans la langue turque: Türkiye, peut être divisé en deux composants: Türk, qui signifie 'fort, puissant' en ancien turc et le suffixe-iye : 'terres des'. La péninsule anatolienne (l'essentiel de la Turquie moderne), est l'une des plus anciennes régions habitées en permanence dans le monde. Le pays a donc un patrimoine exceptionnel qui vient des nombruex empires et peuples qui ont régné à divers moments de l'histoire, comme les Hittites, les Grecs, les Seldjoukides, les Ottomans et bien d'autres.
