Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz and Russian : Кыргызстан) is a mountainous country in the heart of Central Asia. One explanation for the name 'Kyrgyz', is the Turkic word for 'forty', in reference to the forty regional clans united by Manas, a legendary hero. The photos below give an insight into the traditional way of life in the high valleys, where people live in yurts while the cattle roams the vast pastures (the jailoos).
