Photos from Macedonia

The name Macedonia is related to the ancient Greek word μακεδνος (Makednos), explained as having originally meant 'a tall one' or 'highlander'. Under Alexander the Great, Macedonia was a powerful Empire that extended well beyond today's borders. The region was then part of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the Ottoman Empire, then the Kingdom of Serbia and Yugoslav federation. Macedonia became independent in 1991.
