The name in Georgian for the country is Sakartvelo (Georgian: საქართველო), meaning 'a place for Kartvelians'. According to ancient Georgian Chronicles, the ancestor of the Kartvelian people was Kartlos, the great grandson of the Biblical Japheth. The name 'Georgia' appeared in the Middle Ages, probably because the Gergians especially revere Saint George. The northern border with Russia runs along the Greater Caucasus mountains where the scenery is amazing (for example Kazbegi). The country has many beautiful churches and monasteries (like Ananuri or Gelati) often built in superb locations. |
