Malta ist eine Inselgruppe im zentralen Mittelmeer, die von den Höhepunkten einer Landbrücke zwischen Sizilien und Nordafrika während der letzten Eiszeit gebildet wurden. Die meist akzeptiert Wurzel des Namens Malta ist das griechische Wort μελι (meli), 'Honig'. Eine andere Etymologie ist die phönizische Wort Maleth (Hafen), in Bezug auf die vielen Buchten den Inseln.
