Le nom du Monténégro est en fait l'italien pour 'montagne noire' en référence à l'intérieur boisé et montagneux du pays. En Serbocroate, le pays s'appelle Crna Gora. Le littoral abrite le fjord méditerranéen unique de Kotor.
