Kham y Amdo son dos de los tres estados tradicionales del Tíbet. El tercero es U-Tsang, que más o menos corresponde a la provincia administrativa de hoy del Tíbet. Estas regiones han conservado tradiciones muy fuertes: hay muchos monasterios, estupas y banderas de oración, y la mayoría de la gente se viste de la manera tradicional tibetana. El cumpleaños de Buda se celebra con ceremonias importantes, y los chinos vienen tambien de lejos para asistir. Viajar por la región es difícil: hay pocos autobuses, carreteras en mal estado y hay frecuentes averías. Los visitantes se dará cuenta de la actitud arrogante de la policía china, y sus tensas relaciones con la gente.
