Después de la disolución de la Unión Soviética, Turkmenistán fue gobernada por el megalómano dictador Saparmurat Niyazov hasta su muerte en 2006. Tenía el centro de la capital Ashgabat totalmente reconstruida, se erigió un monumento al número de su 'gloria' e impuso un extravagante culto de la personalidad. De Ashgabat, me dirigí hacia el norte a través del desierto de Karakum a Konye-Urgench. Visité las ruinas de la antigua ciudad de Ürgenç (Urgench), el sitio de la ciudad del camino de la seda que fue arrasada por Gengis Khan.
