Sprachwissenschaftler glauben, dass der Name 'Italien' aus dem alten oskischen VÍTELIÚ kommt, was 'Land der Jungrinder', weil Italien war ein Land reich an Vieh seit der Antike. Italienische Geschichte geht zurück bis ins 9. Jahrhundert v. Chr., dank der frühesten Berichte über Italic Stämme: die Oskern, Umbrer und Lateiner. Später wurde die lateinische Kultur dominant, als Rom erwies sich als die beherrschende Stadt um 350 v. Chr.
