El establecimiento de los primeros estados eslavos orientales en el siglo noveno coincidió con la llegada de los vikingos de Suecia de hoy. Esto está de acuerdo con una teoría que explica que el nombre 'Rus' viene de las lenguas finesas, y de hecho el nombre de Suecia en Finlandia es Ruotsi.
