La ciudad toma su nombre del río Gaillimh, que significa piedra como en 'río pedregoso'. Hoy en día, el río se llama río Corrib, después de Lough Corrib, justo al norte. La ciudad data de 1124 cuando el 'Dún na Bhun Gaillimhe' (Fort, a la Boca del Gaillimh) fue construida por el rey de Connacht. Hoy en día, Galway es considerada como la ciudad más agradable en Irlanda gracias al encanto de su casco antiguo, su magnífico ambiente y su ubicación cerca de las vistas de la costa oeste (Connemara y Co. Clare).
