El nombre Cork en Inglés viene del nombre irlandés Corcaigh, desde corcach que significa 'pantano'. Cork fue originalmente un asentamiento monástico fundado por San Finbarr en el siglo sexto, y alcanzó un carácter urbano en algún momento entre 915 y 922 cuando los vikingos fundaron un puerto comercial. La ciudad está construida sobre el río Lee, que se divide en dos canales en el extremo occidental de la ciudad.
