Photos from BarcelonaTwo different legends are related to the foundation of Barcelona. One attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules and the other to the Carthaginian Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal. The city was actually funded by the Romans under Augustus' reign. Research has shown that the name Barcelona comes from the ancient Iberian Phoenician 'Barkeno', in latin 'Barcino'. During the Middle Ages, the city was variously known as Barchinona, Barçalona, Barchelona, and Barchenona. |
