Es gibt zwei Legenden über die Gründung Barcelonas. Eine schreibt die Gründung dem karthagischen General Hamilkar Barkas (der Vater Hannibals). Die zweite Version behauptet, dass der Halbgott Herakles die Stadt gegründet hat. Die Stadt wurde eigentlich von den Römern unter Augustus gegründet. Die Forschung hat gezeigt, dass der Name Barcelona aus der alten iberischen phönizischen 'Barkeno' stammt (lateinisch 'Barcino'). Im Mittelalter war die Stadt als Barchinona, Barcalona, Barchelona und Barchenona bekannt.
