Photos from Ireland per region or counties

The English word 'Ireland' comes from the Modern Irish 'Éire', which evolved from 'Ériu' (in Old Irish, the name of a Gaelic goddess, which is generally believed to have been the matron goddess of Ireland). The Celts arrived in Ireland in the 6th century BC. In the 8th century AD, Ireland suffered the attacks of the Vikings, who founded many coastal towns including Dublin. From the 1170s, the Anglo-Normans colonized the island and gradually assimilated into the local culture. The 16th and 17th centuries were marked by the reconquest of Ireland by the Tudors. After years of struggles, Ireland got its independence in 1921.
