Photos from Spain

The true origins of the name Espa˝a are disputed. The ancient Roman name Hispania may derive from Hesperia ('western land' or 'land of the setting sun') or from the Phoenician i-spn-ya ('the land where metals are forged'). Other suggested origins are the Punic word Ispanihad and the Basque word Ezpanna which both mean 'edge' or 'border', a reference to the fact that the Iberian peninsula constitutes the southwest of the European continent.
