The name Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya, Spanish Cataluña) began to be used in the 12th century. The origin of the word is subject to diverse interpretations : 'Land of Castles' or 'Land of the Goths' (Gothalania). Historical Catalonia includes the French department of Pyrenees Orientales. Catalan (Catalan: català) is a Romance language related to Occitan in southern France. The scenery is very varied : the high mountains of the Val d'Aran, the Mediterranean coast (particularly beautiful at the Costa Brava), the forest of Montseny, the peaks of Monsterrat. |
