La création des premiers Etats slaves est au 9ème siècle a coïncidé avec l'arrivée des Vikings depuis la Suède d'aujourd'hui. Ceci est en accord avec une théorie expliquant le nom 'Rus' comme venant des langues Finno-Baltiques. En effet le nom de la Suède en finlandais est Ruotsi.
